Artist statement:

Due to Covid, I like many, were suddenly thrust into a world of uncharted waters with health care risks, loss of loved ones, masks, isolation and cancellations of all kinds, including art shows. The world seemed to have turned upside down and a feeling of deep loss and being adrift set in as to how or why create art.  

 

The recent years brought more time for reflection which started a shift in my creative thinking, processes and sketches. I began incorporating found objects and other materials along with my ceramic sculptural pieces to create Assemblage Art Ceramics. This fusion of different media allows me to tell more of the story and provides additional inspiration while incorporating texture, color, form and contrast to explore themes of perfection, imperfection, whimsy, childhood memories, survival and present day concerns. 

 

Biography:

Cheryl, a native of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, has always had her hand in the arts. She began her formal training at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. After two years at Herron, the lure of a larger city and a broader cultural experience brought her to New York City, where she continued her education at The School of Visual Arts. It was there that she earned her BFA in Graphic Design. While residing in New York, she continued to gain experience working in the field of graphic design.

 

After ten years in the Big Apple, she moved back to her hometown. It was there that she and her husband decided to raise their boys and create the design/marketing firm, DOGO Communications, LLC. During this time, she rediscovered her passion for ceramic arts. She studied with various resident artists at the Mary Anderson Center for the Arts and taught several classes in hand building while exhibiting her work locally. The art of hand building allows her to express her thoughts and feelings about many topics in a creative way.

 

She has won numerous awards for her ceramic art and can be seen at various times in regional galleries and national and local juried art shows.
